Brewing question...

I have just recently started my apprenticeship in "brewing" here in Virginia Beach in the last 6 months. My first brew of course was that of a "Bitter" from which I purchased at the Cake and Wine Hobby shop. My question is that of a puzzling one to me. The beer turned out well except for the "body" of the beer; it seemed to be...weak. I did notice though as the beer aged that the "body" of the beer would become more enhanced but still rather weak. Any help would be appreciated. By the way, I do own a copy of "The New Complete Joy of Home Brewing," by Charlie Papazian. OH! and I hope to meet each and everyone of you at a club meeting!
